Indie pop meets cabaret and jazz on one of the most remarkable and original
Danish debut albums of a very long time. The talented songwriter/composer
Mikkel Petterson combines 30s Broadway, 60s L.A. and pop music of the 70s to
set up a stylish and vigorous cocktail party with Alice as the carismatic
center of attention.

Alice Sings the Petterson Songbook sees the light of day in 2002 when
Mikkel meets French-Danish-American-Italian singer Alice Carreri, whose
upbringing differs from his own in every possible way. She being raised in
the avantgarde theatre groupe Odin Teatret, traveling around South America,
Europe and Denmark, he being from a cultivated home in Skjern.

Mikkel spends a great part of his childhood listening to his family's
collection of classical records, and at the age of nine he memorizes the
four movements of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
Later on he develops a fascination for the great American songwriters such
as Gerschwin and Cole Porter, Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach, and also
taking hints from Kurt Weill and the whole European cabaret tradition.
Influences all present when he is composing on the piano or the guitar.
Mikkel Petterson is 30 years old.

Alice, too, is fascinated by music early on. Her French father was a hippie
in 1960s San Fransisco, where he experienced both Jimi Hendrix and Janis
Joplin. When her parents later on settle down in Holstebro, she finds out
that she has a lot more in common with the people of a theatre group than
with her classmates. Singing and playing the piano becomes a sanctuary,
where she can develop her talents.
Alice is now attending the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen and is 27
years old.

Meeting Alice is a defining moment for Mikkel, who, fascinated by her voice
and nature, writes a collection of songs specifically for her. It's these
songs that now surface as the album "Alice Sings the Petterson Songbook".
The music and - not least - the lyrics are in every way inspired by the best
of the two worlds, that Alice and Mikkel represent. The songs are old school
with a touch of the present.
The album is recorded digitally and then transferred to a reel-to-reel tape
recorder to add a warm, analog quality to the music.
